🔍 Module Header Breakdown

When you pull up a module in TXMOD, look at these top-line identifiers first:

  1. TIN (SSN/EIN): Ensures you are looking at the correct taxpayer.
  2. MFT (Master File Tax Code):
    • 30: Individual Income Tax (Form 1040)
    • 01: Corporate Income Tax (Form 1120)
    • 10: Employment Tax (Form 941)
  3. TAX PERIOD (YYYYMM):
    • For calendar year 1040 returns: 202412 = Tax Year 2024.
    • For quarterly returns (941): 202403, 202406, 202409, 202412.
  4. MODULE STATUS: Indicates whether the module is open, closed, or in a collection notice cycle.
  5. FREEZE CODES (-V, -Z, -R, etc.): Always check which freeze flags are active before promising anything to a taxpayer.

Zero-Dollar TCs Matter

Never dismiss a TC simply because the amount is $0.00. For instance:

  • TC 570 $0.00 stops all refunds from issuing!
  • TC 971 AC xxx $0.00 might document a letter sent or an identity hold!
